Our history

One of Georgia's oldest congregations.

Greenwood Baptist was founded in 1772 as Upton Creek Baptist Church in Wilkes County — making it the sixth-oldest Baptist congregation in the state of Georgia.

The congregation eventually settled in the Amity community of Lincoln County, where it has remained since 1812. The sanctuary, completed in 1816, still stands today — built by hand with twelve-inch square pine beams, hand-peeled rafters, and long-leaf pine joists. No power tools. No shortcuts. It has stood for over 200 years.

Through wars, seasons of growth, and quiet years of faithful service, Greenwood Baptist has remained a steady presence in Lincoln County. We are a Southern Baptist church — a congregation that believes in the authority of Scripture, the grace of the Gospel, and the importance of community.

Pastor

Addison Belangia
